Holocaust Memorial Day

On Sunday, 26th January I attended the Holocaust Memorial service at Southend Civic Centre. It was an extremely moving experience.
There was the heart-rending testimony of a Holocaust survivor who spoke of her life as a child in the Warsaw Ghetto and two Nazi death camps. She survived against all odds, and spoke of the great kindness of her liberators when she was freed at the end of the war.
A video was shown of a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, who narrowly escaped death thanks to being sheltered by someone who enabled him to hide and escape the terrible carnage that was all around him.
Both were incredibly moving stories, that moved me - and others present at the service, to tears.
Rabbi Warren Elf of the Southend & District Reform Synagogue gave a very thought-provoking speech on the importance of remembering the Holocaust, and the genocides that have happened since the end of the Second World War.
He spoke with passion, of the need to tackle prejudice and intolerance where it still exists today.
There were poignant readings of poetry, a beautiful violin solo, and the wonderfully soothing and uplifting voices of the Southend Boys' and Girls' Choir who sang with great feeling, in perfect harmony.
